Mark June 13 on the calendar: Rowan County is throwing what looks like one of the biggest free events of the summer to mark America's 250th birthday, and it's all happening at Dan Nicholas Park. AmeriFest 250 is free, family-friendly, and runs from mid-afternoon straight through a drone show after dark, with Visit Rowan County's full guide calling out live music, food trucks, and colonial games as the centerpieces.

The schedule is built so you can drop in whenever works for your family. Gates open at 2:30 p.m., live music starts at 3:00, and the park's regular attractions — carousel rides, mini golf, lawn games, the Rowan Wild zoo exhibits — come online at 4:00. One thing to know: gates close to new entries at 8:00 p.m. so the team can clear the parking flow before the drone show at 9:15. The lineup features a patriotic set from the 208th Army Band, regional acts His & Hers and The Local Boys, and NC Americana duo Chatham Rabbits as the headliner. That's a real touring band, not a fill-in.

Beyond the stage, Rowan County's official announcement highlights the local-history angle that makes this feel like more than a generic Fourth-of-July warm-up. Rowan Public Library is running America-themed storytime, the Rowan Museum is putting on colonial games for kids, and there will be community booths covering voter registration and veterans services. North Carolina was on the front lines of the events that led to 1776, and Rowan was right in the middle of it — the festival doubles as a low-key history lesson without losing the fun-day feel.

Weekends like this are the part of small-city living buyers ask me about more than mortgage rates. When people are deciding between Salisbury and a Charlotte suburb, what often tips the scales isn't the schools or the commute — it's whether there's actually something to do on a Saturday with the kids. June 13 is one of those days, and the price is right.
